You decide to stay and visit Iran more? That is quite an easy process to extend Iran tourist visa. It will be done in police stations of foreign affairs where you will submit the required documents and answer a few questions, then you will have an up to 30 days visa extension. The good news is that you can repeat it once more. Let’s tell you how is the whole process.

At your entrance to the police office, you go through the security, hand over mobile phone and electronic devices and you will be allowed to enter. Your dress will also be checked so obey the normal dress code of the country.

Present your passport to the visa extension officer and fill out a form with some basic information. Then the staff will ask you a few questions such as:  What is the reason for your visa extension? How long do you want to stay in Iran? Where are you going to stay? Are you coming to Iran for tourism or work? Be sure to include a valid reason for extending your visa to convince the officer. Otherwise, the application may be rejected.

After your extension is approved you need to pay the visa fee. You can either use an Iranian debit card to pay on the spot or if you don’t have one available go to a nearby bank to pay the required fee. And as the final step, return to the station and present all documents together with the receipt of payment to the officer.

The following documents are required to hand over the police staff:

  • Your Passport
  • Two copies of the ID page of your passport
  • Two Passport-size photos (3X4, ladies with hairs covered)
  • Your current Iran visa or e-Visa and two copies
  • Two copies of the completed visa extension form
  • Two copies of the visa extension payment receipt

Tips of visa extension:

  • Respect the dress code.
  • Nice positive attitude, nice smile and friendly manner almost works.
  • Visa extension application is accepted a few days before the main visa expiration.
  • It is recommended to refer to the police office early in the morning to avoid wasting time in queue. Offices are open Saturday to Wednesday, from 7:30 AM to 2:00 PM, the early birds can get their visa back on the same day.

You can apply for a maximum of two visa extensions, each for a maximum of 30 days. So, a 45-day visa plus two 30-day additional extensions will allow you to stay for 105 days.

However, if your visa is an on arrival one, you can extend it only once to stay in Iran for a total of 75 days.

We suggest to request the second extension in a different city, so they don’t ask why you haven’t left the city in the past 30 days.

This process is cheap. The Iran visa extension costs around 345,000 IRR and can be paid with an Iranian tourist debit card or in cash at Melli Bank. An additional fee of approximately 10,000 IRR is also needed for making copies and purchasing folders for your documents.

There is a fine of 450,000 rials per day for people whose visa is expired.
