Question:
Salaam,
I know it’s obligatory for women to wear a chador when visiting holy shrines like that of Imam Reza in Mashhad. I want to know if it is permitted to wear a black abaya and black head covering instead. I am an American Muslim pilgrim who has visited Mashhad many times but I have never gotten the hang of a chador. For me, an abaya is much more comfortable, stays in place better, and seems to accomplish the same level of modesty. Has anyone tried this?
Answer:
If you wear a long black abaya that would be enough. You just need to cover your hair thoroughly. Besides they will give you a chador at the entrance if required. Thus there will be nothing to be worried about.
