Primary Iran Visa Questions

Citizens of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bolivia, China, Egypt, Georgia, Hong Kong, Lebanon, Malaysia, Oman, Syria, Turkey, and Venezuela can enter Iran without a visa.

All foreign passport holders, except a few nationalities, require a visa to enter Iran. Here is some detailed information in brief:

  • Countries who can visit Iran without a visa: Armenia (90d), Turkey (90d), Azerbaijan (30d), Bolivia (30d), Egypt (20d), Georgia (45d), Venezuela (15d), Lebanon (30d), Malaysia (15d), Oman (30d), Syria (90d), China and Hong Kong (30d).
  • Countries who are eligible for Iran airport visa: Albania, Armenia, Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia, Herzegovina, Brazil, Brunei, Bulgaria, China, Croatia, Cuba, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Mexico, Mongolia, Netherlands, New Zealand, North Korea, Norway, Oman, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Russian Federation, Serbia, Singapore, Slovak, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Tajikistan, Thailand, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, UAE, Uzbekistan, Venezuela, and Vietnam.

  • Countries who need to get Iran visa before entering (from consulate): Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Tajikistan, Colombia, Somalia, Bangladesh, Jordan, Sri Lanka, Canada, United Kingdom, United States, , Ireland, Nepal, Yemen and Libya.
  • Countries who can get a 3-month tourist visa on arrival: Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia and Slovenia.
  • Countries who can not travel to Iran: Israeli passport holders and anyone with an Israeli stamp in their passport will not get an Iran visa.

Getting your visa with LeaveAbode is simple and quick:

  1. Fill in the application form.
  2. Pay the service fee to start the process.
  3. Get the authorization code within 2 business days. The authorization code or reference number is the electronic receipt for your visa.
  4. Refer to the Iranian consulate to collect your visa or collect it from the airport when you arrive in Iran.

In three ways you can apply for your Iran visa:

  • Apply for an Iran visa at the consular section of the Embassy of Iran.
  • If you are eligible, you can obtain a tourist visa on arrival at international airports of Iran, for a stay of 30 days. To do this, you must register online on ministry of foreign affairs website. It supports only tourists visa, business or journalism visas must be obtained from the Consulate before departure.
  • And finally, as the most reliable method, we recommend you to apply for your Iran visa through LeaveAbode Iran Visa Service that is only €15 and the risk of rejection reduces to zero.

Each method has its pros and cons. Here is a comparison of the three above mentioned methods with the pros and cons of each:

Methods Pros Cons
1 Iran embassy
  • takes longer time
  • physical referral
  • leave passport for at leave 2 weeks
2 MFA e-visa
  • apply online
  • collect from embassy or airport
  • takes longer time
  • sometimes you never get answer back
3 LeaveAbode visa service
  • apply online
  • collect from embassy or airport
  • 97% approval guarantee
  • only 2 working days

To be at the safe side, it is better to apply for your visa about 4-3 weeks before. However, the process will not take that long, you will have enough time to refer to the Iranian consulate for collection and can book and confirm your flight and other travel services confidently.

However, we accept the requests until 3 working days before your arrival but we don’t recommend it.

It usually takes 2 working days to get the authorization code.

Here is a comprehensive guide about all visa-related time and duration:

  • Iranian tourist visa authorization code is valid for 1 month to be stamped.
  • After being stamped, you have 3-month time to enter Iran.
  • This visa can allow you to be in Iran for one day until 30 days depending on your requested duration. It is extendible for 2 other 30 days while you are in Iran.
  • The visa is single entry and if you require more entries, you need to apply twice.

Visa on arrival (VOA or airport visa) is a tourist visa granted to citizens of 180 countries upon their arrival to Iran at international airports of Iran. Read more: What Iran airports can I get my Iran visa?

Later, the Iranian MFA (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) has launched the system of electronic visa application that you must apply for VOA in advance, it is called e-Visa.

But anyhow, this system is not so prompt and reliable, you may need to wait longer time to get authorized while in some cases the passengers never got answer from them.

“Although Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs can offer diverse range of options and services, reports and comments made by foreign passengers indicate that it would be better to apply for visa, even airport visa, prior to travel.” stated by the MFA. So, based on this statement it is suggested to apply for your visa before.

Iran Visa Application Questions

The percentage of Iran visa rejection through LeaveAbode visa service is very low. Based on our last applications, less than 1% of requests may get rejected. The visa will be issued for you until your requirements are provided properly and your occupation is not sensitive. Journalism and the politics related jobs may result in rejection. However, pay attention that the MFA (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) is the only authority in visa cases. If they have any concerns about any application, they could hold up the process. In that case, we keep in touch with them and update you with the result.

If there is no Iran consulate or embassy in your country, you can either collect your visa at your arrival airport into Iran. If your nationality is not allowed to get the visa at the airport, you can arrange it to collect your visa at a nearby country with an Iran embassy. You may either be able to collect your visa at the country where you have stopover for at least a day.

Other than your passport, passport-size photo and authorization code (if you applied for before), you need to offer the travel insurance and visa fee to the Costums officer. The printout of the insurance must be in English and explicitly contain the name of Iran, otherwise you will be asked to purchase an insurance right there at the airport.

General Iran Visa Questions

  1. Having Israeli visa stamp in your passport
  2. Being on any other passport types except the normal tourist passport
  3. Having some specific occupations such as journalism or political related jobs

Except for (ex)Israeli nationality, other previous or current nationalities other than the one you are going to use don’t normally affect your Iran visa application.

All nationals who are eligible for VOA can enter the free trade zones without a visa and stay there up to 14 days. The visa-free zones in Iran are Kish Island, Qeshm Island, Chabahar, Aras, Anzali, Arvand, and Maku. Among all, accessing Kish Island and Qeshm Island is easier as those have international airports with frequent international flights. To exit the free zones and enter Iran mainland, you will require a visa.

We quote the exact words from the IKA airport website:

  • This is to avoid standing in long queues for visa in airport (sometimes it may take until 24 hours)
  • Difference of hours in different areas of the world is another reason. Your guest may arrive in Imam Khomeini Airport at 3:00 am. At this time even the idea of waiting for visa after ten hours of flight is disappointing.
  • There are certain forms that visa applicants must fill in, which requires you to apply for visa in prior.
  • Administrative process of visa application takes some time, and it constitutes another reason for the requirement to apply visa in prior.
  • Sometimes the applicant may be rejected for visa (in some cases this happens due to not knowing the details of laws and regulations governing airport visa).
  • For getting Iran’s visa, you’d better apply in prior. If you are sure that your guest is qualified to be given airport visa, you can write the name of airport in your guest’s form. It is helpful when preparing application form of visa.

If you have already applied for Iran’s visa, please be noted that:

  • You will get airport visa sooner.
  • You are more likely to get visa.
  • You would have much less stress for visa, because you do not have to stand in long queues for visa.
  • Your visa process would be easier because you do not have to fill in various forms (just having passport and telling your reference code suffices to get visa).

Passport holders of the below countries are eligible to get Iran Visa on Arrival (VOA):

Albania, Armenia, Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia, Herzegovina, Brazil, Brunei, Bulgaria, China, Croatia, Cuba, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Mexico, Mongolia, Netherlands, New Zealand, North Korea, Norway, Oman, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Russian Federation, Serbia, Singapore, Slovak (Rep.), Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Tajikistan, Thailand, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, UAE, Uzbekistan, Venezuela, and Vietnam.

No Iran tourist visa is single entry. But you can get two authorization codes for 2 entries.

Your visa is valid for the duration you ask for in visa application that is up to 30 days. If you’d like to stay longer, you need to refer to the “Police Department of Alien Affairs” 2-3 days before your visa expires. There you will be asked about your reasons of extension. You can extend your visa two times and each time for up to 30 days.

The offices are open Saturday to Wednesday from 7:30 am. to 2:00 pm. You’d better refer to them early in the morning to avoid wasting time in queues. Check Iranian national holidays to avoid any delays.

Here is a list of Alien police offices in different cities:

  • Tehran: Soroush St., After Motahari Junction, Shariati Ave.
  • Shiraz: Moddarres Blvd, near Vali-e Asr Sq.
  • Isfahan: Azadi Sq, Roudaki St.
  • Yazd: Near Abouzar Sq, Kashani St
  • Mashad: Next to Azad Univ., Rahnamaee St.

As an American, British or Canadian passport holder, you can also visit Iran on a tourist visa. The visa process is neither hard nor complicated, but it is time-consuming and you need to wait for about 40 days.

First, you need to book a packaged trip and provide us with your documents. We secure an authorization code from the Iranian Ministry of Foreign affair (MFA). Once you have your authorization code, you can pick-up your visa from an Iranian embassy.

Read more about Iran visa process for the U.S. citizens, U.K. citizens and the Canadian citizens.

If you will collect your visa from the airport upon arrival, there is no need to refer to the embassy for the fingerprint.
