Lar or Larestan airport began operations in 1960 after the city was stricken by an earthquake to expedite and facilitate assistance. Over the next 20 years, the airport was gradually completed. The destinations were mostly national but after 1993, it became an international airport with its first international flight to Dubai, UAE.

Based on the official statistics in 1999, Larestan Airport was the 22nd busiest airport in Iran in terms of the number of domestic flights, and the 4th busiest airport in terms of the number of international flights after Imam Khomeini International Airport, Mashhad Airport, Isfahan Airport, Shiraz airport and Tabriz Airport.
